Stephen King’s The Dark Tower in Production

Idris Elba will star as gunslinger Roland Deschain in the Stephen King story “The Dark Tower” with Matthew McConaughey as an evil sorcerer. Deschain embarks on a journey roaming an Old West-like landscape to reach a mystical tower that can save their decaying world.

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower was originally published in seven volumes between 1982 and 2004, with a further book set in the middle of the story released in 2012, as well as various expansions and adaptations published by Marvel Comics since 2007.

Various reports suggest that the Dark Tower is currently being planned as a series of movies, and it’s unclear if or how it will follow the seven original books.

In its long road to the big screen, J. J. Abrams had previously worked with Stephen King to develop the story for film over a period of several years starting in 2007. Universal Pictures revealed in 2010 that it would bring the series to both the big and the small screens via a trilogy of feature films alternating with two seasons of a television series to bridge gaps between the films.

On May 18, 2016, Stephen King tweeted a photo of the Horn of Eld with the caption “Last Time Around”, which is related to a scene from the end of the final book, The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower. From the Wikipedia description:
