It’s All About Story
It is all about story. In fact, without great story telling, what else is there…in practically any medium? A film without a story is like a road trip without a map…oh sure, it may be great fun for part of the trip, it may be disaster for the rest. You think James Cameron or J.K. Rowlings start a project without a map…a plan…? In its simplest form, story simply attracts us, leads and compels us down a path, and concludes the journey with a resolution.
It’s All About Story: Every Story has Endless Possibilities
This section of Big Story Group is devoted to the exploration of story and the endless potential and possibilities we have to involve our audience with the structure and substance of our story.
Every medium has a signature or history of story. Books break story down into bite-size elements that pull readers through from beginning to end. Theatre, the origination of story for entertainment, delivers its complete meaning in three acts…the structural precursor to almost every movie ever made.
From Shakespeare to Stanislavsky Chekhov to Campbell, Aristotle to Lawrence, Nabokov to Neitsche and Schrader to Mamet, Coppola to Wilder and McKee to Kurosawa (we couldn’t possibly name them all) we’ll explore the ideas and ideologies of great story telling…its all about story.
If you’ve read “The Power of Myth” or “The Memo That Started it All” or “The Pixar Story Rules” or TheoPhrastus’ “The Characters” or “Hero With a Thousand Faces” you may already have a sense of where we’re going with this. Maybe you’ve read every book ever written about good story writing, but our goal is to explore every angle…not just the textbook angle. Great story telling does rely on sound structure, but that doesn’t mean your story can’t break the rules.

“Write every day, line by line, page by page, hour by hour. Do this despite fear. For above all else, beyond imagination and skill, what the world asks of you is courage, courage to risk rejection, ridicule and failure. As you follow the quest for stories told with meaning and beauty, study thoughtfully but write boldly. Then, like the hero of the fable, your dance will dazzle the world. ” -Robert McKee
