Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke star in the “Magnificent Seven” from director Antoine Fuqua. The film is based on the 1960 Western classic of the same name directed by John Sturges, which starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Eli Wallach, Charles Bronson and James Coburn. That 1960 film was a remake of the 1954 Akira Kurosawa film “Seven Samurai.” From the Sony Pictures Entertainment description:
Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins star in the 2016 “Westworld” series from HBO, inspired by the 1973 film, based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 script. J. J. Abrams and Jonathan Nolan created the Westworld pilot, and the premiere episode is directed by Nolan. In an interview with Christopher Nolan and producer Lisa Joy, Nolan said:
“The Hateful Eight” is the upcoming and much-anticipated film by Quentin Tarantino starring Channing Tatum, Samuel L. Jackson and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Set in post-Civil War Wyoming, travelers and bounty hunters get stranded in a winter blizzard where they become involved in betrayal and deception.
“The Homesman” follows the story of an indomitable homesteader who crosses paths with a man about to be hanged for claim jumping and decides to help him out in the 1850s American West. In exchange for saving his life, he agrees to be the ‘homesman’ and escort three mentally unstable women from Nebraska to Iowa, dealing with thieves, dangerous Indians and other hardships along the way. Although he promised her anything she pleases if she would save him, he admits that “Three crazy women for five weeks is a lot more than I bargained for.”
“The Young Ones” is the upcoming science fiction western starring Michael Shannon, Nicholas Hoult, Elle Fanning and Kodi Smit-McPhee about a future where drought has turned the United States into a dust bowl and everyone must defend their land. The dystopian story pits neighboring ranchers against each other who are willing to do anything to ensure the survival of their families. From the Sundance review by Rodrigo Perez for Indiewire:
“A modern-day western disguised within a futuristic milieu…evoking dust-bowl struggles and Americana sensibilities, ‘Young Ones’ creates a unique hybrid of genres.”

“The Gunfighter” is a short postmodern Western-comedy directed by Eric Kissack and written by Kevin Tenglin. The story is influenced and has fun with the classic Western and narration, apparently inspired from National Lampoon and Mad Magazine style of humor. The unusual element is that The Gunfighter can hear the provocative Narrator…and so can all of the other characters in the saloon.
