On the continents of Westeros and Essos, members of several noble houses are in a civil war for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms. The central themes of the series are the rising threat from the impending winter and the mythical creatures of the North, and the attempts of the exiled last scion of the realm’s deposed dynasty to reclaim the throne. From the HBO description:

Summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne continues. It stretches from the south, where heat breeds plots, lusts and intrigues, to the vast and savage eastern lands, where a young queen raises an army. All the while, in the frozen north, an 800-foot wall of ice precariously protects the war-ravaged kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men…all play the ‘Game of Thrones.’

In contrast to the previous seasons, it will largely rely on original content not found in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, but will also adapt material from the upcoming sixth novel in the series, The Winds of Winter, as well as some content from the fourth and fifth novels, A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons.

The sixth season will see the return of Isaac Hempstead Wright as Bran Stark, Kristian Nairn as Hodor, Ellie Kendrick as Meera Reed, and Gemma Whelan as Yara Greyjoy, all of whom did not appear in the fifth season.

At the Reach, House Tarly will be introduced, with Freddie Stroma joining the cast as Samwell Tarly’s brother Dickon Tarly, a character who is mentioned in the novels but has yet to appear in them. Other members of House Tarly that will be introduced are Randyll Tarly, played by James Faulkner; Melessa Tarly, played by Samantha Spiro and Talla Tarly, who will be portrayed by Rebecca Benson.

Veteran actor Max von Sydow was cast to play the Three-Eyed-Raven, who will be training Bran. The character was previously played by Struan Rodger in the fourth season finale “The Children”. David Bradley confirmed in August 2015, that he will be returning to the show as Walder Frey after last appearing in the third season finale “Mhysa”, but he did not confirm when he will be returning.
