Your Creative Direction

It’s possible that the best screenplay you ever wrote could be better as a television series…or webisodes…or mobisodes. Creative direction is often self-evident, but as the digital world opens the doors wider, keep your eyes open for different opportunities. If the only thing you want to do is write that screenplay for a major Hollywood film, you may be limiting your opportunities, overestimating the chances of even getting it read, and underestimating the possibilities of the burgeoning world of entertainment media.

If the topic is resonating with you, read the Google study about content consumption on four screens…things are changing…fast. Content consumption spread across the four internet connected small screens will continue to lead content consumption growth. Current generations of content consumers are referred to as the ‘discovery age’ because they are using the four screens to discover content that interests them…they are not necessarily looking for content they are already familiar with.

If your creative direction started out with a story you imagined would be perfect for television, you have at least two other doors open to market your content…mobisodes and webisodes. The long tail economy continues to get longer as we move away from the controlled sourcing of content by the big studios and television companies. This means that now that such a vast audience is connected to vast content choices (via internet connected devices) they can discover anything and everything that interests them…including your story. (Read “The Long Tail” by Chris Anderson – Forget squeezing millions from a few megahits at the top of the charts.   1. When do the contests start! I absolutely love the idea of creating a photo graphic novel and will get started on my story outline right now…can’t wait to get the new Adobe Photoshop Elements version that has a graphic novel filter built-in!
