2001 A Space Odyssey Digital Restoration

The ground-breaking science fiction film “2001 A Space Odyssey” from filmmaking legend Stanley Kubrick returns to UK cinemas in November after a complete digital restoration. This new trailer has been created for Kubrick’s 1968 “2001 A Space Odyssey” in advance of its re-release as part of British Film Institute’s sci-fi season.

The film follows a mission into space after humanity finds a mysterious, unnatural and obviously artificial object buried beneath the Lunar surface. Humans have uncovered the monolith and set out on a mission to the outer reaches of our system with the intelligent computer H.A.L. 9000 on a quest to discover its origins. The film elicited strong reaction by audiences, transfixing many and confounding others. Roger Ebert wrote about the film in 1968:

From the Hollywood Reporter announcement:

Ahead of the digitally restored film’s special limited U.K. release on Nov. 28 as part of the British Film Institute’s “Sci-Fi: Days of Fears and Wonder” season, a new trailer commission by the BFI and Warner Bros. has now been unveiled. Created by Ignition Creative London, the trailer is the first for this title in four decades, and uses Hal as the central figure to create an intensely eerie experience. In a statement released Tuesday, Jan Harlan, Kubrick’s executive producer described the clip as “the best trailer for this film I have ever seen! To use Hal’s voice is brilliant.” Read more.
